What red-blooded Newfoundland and Labradorian would EVER dreamed of a day when such a headline appeared in the NFLD news? We are a fishing proviance (or, at least we USED to be before Ottawa managed the fish out of the waters)... but, at least we have the oil now.
From VOCM News: Two men are facing charges after a fish bust on the Burin Peninsula. RCMP conducted a traffic stop involving a pick up truck in Lewin's Cove early this morning. Police noticed an unknown quantity of various species of fish inside the vehicle. DFO officials were called to the scene and seized the truck and fish for various Fisheries Act violations. RCMP also laid several charges against the driver of the truck for offences under the Highway Traffic Act. The two men were released to appear in court at a later date.
In related news, the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization has introduced new management measures to help conserve and manage key fish stocks, including northern shrimp and cod. The new measures were agreed to at NAFO's 33rd annual meeting in Halifax.
500 years of heritage and culture at risk because NFLD doesn't have a say in its own resources. Sad.
